Glossary


AC97 Audio Codec 97 (Codec is from Coder-Decoder). Commonly used to refer to the ADC/DAC found on SoundBlaster Live! and Audigy cards.
ADC Analog to Digital Converter. A device that converts analog signals into digital form.
APS Audio Production Studio. EMU10k1-based sound-card by E-mu Systems Inc.
ASIO Audio Stream Input Output. A multi-channel audio transfer protocol developed by Steinberg.
DAC Digital to Analog Converter. A device that converts digital signals into analog form.
DOO Digital Output Only. AC97 Codec setting permitting the recording of multiple analog sources.
DSP Digital Signal Processing.
E-Drive E-mu APS Input/Output module designed to fit standard 5-1/4" drive bay.
FXBus Effects Bus. A common path that routes a digital effects signal from one or more sources to one or more destinations.
GPR General Purpose Register.
I2S Inter-IC Sound, a digital sound format.
LiveDrive Input/Output module designed to fit standard 5-1/4" drive bay, for use with Live! and Audigy cards.
MIDI Musical Instrument Digital Interface. Protocol for interconnection and control of musical instruments.
PCM Pulse Code Modulation. Uncompressed encoding scheme for storing digital data, typically associated with wave data.
SoundFont Data format containing samples and instructions for wavetable synthesis.
SPDIF Sony-Philips Digital Interface Format, a digital audio interconnection standard.
TAD Telephone Answering Device (or voice modem).
kX-compatible Soundcards compatible with the kX Audio Driver. Currently supported models include all EMU10k1 and EMU10k2-based PCI soundcards manufactured by Creative Technology Ltd. and/or E-mu Systems Inc.. Please review the FAQ for details.
